I want real food!

Posted by Shannon on May 13th, 2006

For those of you who don’t know, we have no kitchen. ‘No kitchen’ you say, ‘how is that possible?’ We have a room that should be a kitchen with some boxes and tables and holes in the wall. We’ve been surviving on restaurant and take out food for over a month now.

Ok, really, I’m tired of eating out. Ted and I are masters of spending our small amount of hard earned money on take out food. It’s bad for us and it’s expensive but it is something we always splurged on. But really, I am so tired of take out and restaurant food, I can’t believe it. Even my favorites, I just don’t want. We went out for lunch today with our friend Dan and D and then for supper with my Dad and his wife Della tonight, both meals were yummy! But I’m still done with it. My stomach doesn’t want it anymore, it is unhappy. What happened to the skinny little girl who could eat the same fried chicken every single day and not only was I never sick of it, I also didn’t gain a pound… how did I not get scurvy?

I know, I know, all the critics out there who were (or maybe still are, I don’t know) who thought we were biting off more than we could chew with this place are thinking, ‘I told you so… you guys didn’t think this through…’. But it isn’t that bad. I’m still really enjoying the work we are doing and can’t wait to get into other stuff (if our social life didn’t keep getting in the way - I love it, don’t get me wrong) but I just want my own home cooked food!

But who knows, maybe this will cure (or at least be a decent treatment) of our restaurant disease. Once we get a kitchen we’ll be so excited we turn into those people who I’ve always wanted to be - you know the ones who cook regularly and sit down at the table together and eat… I’m sure you’ve met them… they’re you, aren’t they?!? Someone tell me how you do it?

Do you have a microwave? Can’t you make baked potatoes?

While I confess that we do have a kitchen, it is but a fragment of the size that we came from and but a fraction of the size of what we’re building; Worse yet the vast majority of our kitchen dishes, pots and pans, etc are in storage — baking a cake without measuring spoons in an odd size pan sucks, especially since we tend toward ‘domestic gourmet.’ I have more dishes and cooking options when we go camping!

For now, while we’re “roughing it” we have two very important cooking options — 1) the grill, with which we’re having loads of fun discovering new grilling/smoking techniques. Meat, fish in tinfoil and even pizza and 2) the crockpot. In the morning, put a couple of boneless, skinless (may be still frozen) chicken breasts in the crock pot. Pour 1 bottle of Zesty Italian salad dressing (I use the Kraft Free) over the chicken, turn it on and you’ll have supper ready by 5pm. Pick up a bag of salad and a bottle of wine and it’s a meal!

    Good luck!

    Oops!
Wow, my brain is asleep and those paragraphs made no sense …after “camping!” insert the following words:
–nevertheless we find ways to eat meals cooked at home.
